3 defensive driving tips to help keep you safe

Driving is an essential part of the daily routine for many nationwide, but it can also present a lot of dangers. Defensive driving is a set of techniques and skills you can incorporate to reduce accidents on the road.

You can start driving defensively by following these tips to keep you safe on your commute.

1. Remain distraction-free and fully alert

One of the most vital defensive driving trips is to stay alert and focused. Avoid distracting activities while driving, such as using your phone, applying makeup, eating or drinking. Keep your eyes on the road and scan your surroundings. Pay attention to road signs, plus other motorists and pedestrians.

2. Brake early to maintain a safe distance

Maintaining a safe distance between your car and the one in front of you is crucial in defensive driving. Keep a space of at least two seconds from the vehicle in front to give yourself enough time to react in case of an emergency or sudden braking. Decelerate sooner to provide more room to brake and give the drivers behind you a sign that you are slowing down.

3. Remain calm and avoid hostility

Avoid aggressive driving behaviors such as weaving in and out of traffic, making sudden lane changes or tailgating. Do not let “road rage” get to you. Instead, stay calm and patient while avoiding confrontations with other drivers. If another driver responds aggressively, safely stay away from them, do not reciprocate the energy and do not stop your vehicle to address them.

Overall, defensive driving involves being both reactive and proactive to avoid a collision on the road.
