How to prepare for holiday road trips

On Behalf of | Sep 25, 2023 | Auto Accident

As fall and winter approach, so does the holiday season. For many people, this means hitting the road to visit with family and friends. While holiday road trips can be exciting, there are risks associated with having millions of drivers simultaneously on the road.

Taking the time to prepare for your trip can reduce the risk of a serious accident.

Perform vehicle maintenance

In 2022, more than 100 million people embarked on holiday road trips, creating congested highways and interstates. For most holiday travelers, the prospect of breaking down in these conditions is far worse than at a less busy time of year. To ensure your car can handle the trip, inspect it for tire inflation and properly functioning brakes. Likewise, ensure that all fluids, including oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid and coolant have appropriate levels.

Plan ahead for your route

By strategizing your travel route, you can potentially steer clear of traffic jams and unforeseen detours. Use a GPS or map to begin charting your course. Before you leave, share your itinerary with someone you trust who can check on you and your progress if something happens. Many phones allow you to share your GPS location with a trusted friend or family member.

Sleep before your trip

Fatigue is a substantial cause of motor vehicle accidents. To mitigate the risk, ensure you get a good night’s sleep before your trip and take frequent breaks to rest and stretch your legs. Avoid pushing yourself to drive without breaks, as it can impair your decision-making abilities and increase the likelihood of an accident.

Holiday travel can often lead to heightened stress levels. However, when you take the proper steps to prepare before your road trip, you better ensure a safe ride for everyone.
