The potential risks of small dogs around children

On Behalf of | Nov 6, 2023 | Blog, Premises Liability

Small dogs, which people often see as cute and harmless, can pose unexpected risks to children. Such small dogs can include Chihuahuas, dachshunds, Jack Russell terriers and cocker spaniels.

These cases involve situations where property owners may be responsible for injuries that occur on their premises.

Aggressive behavior

One significant risk associated with small dogs is their potential for aggressive behavior. Small dogs may feel the need to protect their territory or exhibit aggressive tendencies when provoked.

Children, who are often curious and playful, may inadvertently provoke a small dog, leading to bites or attacks. Property owners have a duty to ensure the safety of their visitors, which includes taking precautions to prevent dog-related injuries.

Property owners should consider implementing preventative measures. These may include fencing or securing the dog in a separate area when children are present. Additionally, dog owners must take responsibility for their pets by ensuring they are well-trained, socialized and under control.

Lack of control

Another concern with small dogs is the difficulty in controlling them, especially when they are around children. These dogs are generally more agile and quick, making it challenging for owners to prevent them from approaching or interacting with kids. If a small dog suddenly jumps on a child or knocks them over, it can result in injuries.

Inadequate supervision

The diminutive size of small dogs can cause people to relax their usual dog-child supervision protocols. For example, children ages 1 to 4 are the most likely dog attack victims and among the least able to defend themselves when left unsupervised with a small dog.

Even small dogs have sharp teeth and can bite or scratch, leading to injuries. Whether a dog is small or large, children need close supervision while they play or interact with the animal.

Property owners and dog owners must ensure the safety of their premises and pets. It is important to take preventative measures and be aware of the potential dangers of small dogs.
