Why drowsy driving is a serious road safety issue

On Behalf of | Mar 19, 2026 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Fatigue is part of daily life for many hard-working adults. When they have family responsibilities and high-demand careers, sleep may be what they sacrifice to fulfill all of their obligations.

Unfortunately, failing to get adequate rest could be a very dangerous decision. Not only does it affect an individual’s health, but it can also affect their safety in traffic. Drowsy driving is a very common choice that is far more dangerous than people realize. What makes drowsy driving so risky?

The possibility of falling asleep

Researchers polling people about their experiences while driving have discovered that a small but alarming percentage of drivers have fallen asleep at the wheel. Approximately one in 25 motorists, or 4% of the public polled, acknowledged falling asleep at least once while driving in the 30 days before answering the question. Even a few seconds of unconsciousness while driving can be enough to cause devastating collisions.

The impairment caused by fatigue

People who work double shifts or stay up all night may be more impaired by their sleep deprivation than they realize. Those who have gone extended periods without sleep may demonstrate many of the same cognitive impairments as those under the influence of alcohol.

Increased reaction times, diminished decision-making capability and difficulty focusing are all common among fatigued drivers. While there may not be any test to prove that a motorist was too drowsy to drive safely, the obvious consequences of their choices can be proof enough.

People hurt by drowsy drivers may have the right to file insurance claims or personal injury lawsuits. Reviewing car crash circumstances can help injured parties evaluate their options for seeking compensation.
